What is fuel flow math and how is it helpful?

Fuel flow math was added in version 2.55 of the Flight Data Viewer. (Late September 2024) Fuel flow math allows you to add 1 to 3 plot lines to the fuel flow graph and data columns to the data grid.
Options are:
  • Add main fuel flow to aux fuel flow
  • Subtract aux fuel flow from main fuel flow
  • Subtract main fuel flow from aux fuel flow
When would this be useful? Here is an example from an actual user. Their system contains two fuel flow sensors. The first sensor reads the fuel flow from the tank to the carburetor. A second sensor reads the return flow from the carburetor back to the tank. Subtracting the value of the second fuel flow from the first provides the engine's actual fuel burn rate.  To configure the Flight Data Viewer for this example:

Run the 'Flight Data Viewer' and from the menu select 'Options'.
Select the RDAC #1 or RDAC #2 tab.
  1. Enable 'Fuel Flow'
  2. Enable 'Fuel Flow Rate (Tank #2)'
  3. Enable 'Subtract aux from main fuel flow'
  4. Rename 'Fuel Flow' to 'Tank to Carb'
  5. Rename 'Fuel Flow Rate (Tank #2)' to 'Carb Return'
  6. Rename 'Subtract aux from main fuel flow' to 'Engine Burn Rate'
