How to use the flight data / KML (GPS) merge utility
Optional step, but recommended. Backup the .FDXML files that you will be adding the GPS (KML) file data to.
Start the 'Merge KML File' utility. See Figure A below.
Enter the folder where the 'Flight Data Viewer' (FDXML) files are located. You can click the '...' next to the entry field to display the folder browse dialog.
Enter the folder where the GPS data (KML) files are located. (
Note: in the example shown in Figure A the files are located in the same folder, but this is not required.
)
After you have entered valid folder paths the contents of the folders will be displayed.
To determine if the FDXML file already contains GPS data click the 'Scan GPS Data Status' button. The 'GPS Data Status' column will update. An example is shown in Figure B. An 'X' means the file does not contain GPS data; the Google Earth symbol means that it does contain GPS data; and a question mark means that the file has not been scanned yet.
Note: Even if the FDXML file already contains GPS data you can merge in GPS data more than once. You may need to do that to shift the time relation between the FDXML and KML data.
Select (click) the matching FDXML and KML files.
Click the 'Merge' button.
The dialog shown in Figure C will be displayed.
If the event times recorded by your EFIS and Foreflight are different you can sync them by enabling the 'Offset the flights event times?' checkbox. Select 'Add' or 'Subtract' and enter a time offset. In the example shown in Figure C one minute and 30 seconds will be added to the times recorded by your EFIS.
Note: If you've already merged data into this FDXML file and offset the time, the dialog will indicated this.
Click the 'Execute Merge' button.
Open the flight in the 'Flight Data Viewer'.
Note: If the flight is already open you will need to close it, then reopen before you will see the GPS data added by the merge operation.
Note: If you don't see the flight path tab or GPS altitude column you will need to update your configuration. (Select 'Options' from the main menu.)
